NCDC Launches 21-Day Ebola Watch for Exposed Travellers
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has commenced a 21-day monitoring programme for travellers who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus, as part of efforts to prevent the disease from entering the country.
The move follows the ongoing Ebola outbreaks in parts of East and Central Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, which have prompted heightened surveillance measures across several countries. Health authorities say the 21-day watch period corresponds with the maximum incubation period of the Ebola virus, allowing officials to closely monitor individuals for possible symptoms.
According to the NCDC, Nigeria currently has no confirmed case of Ebola linked to the ongoing outbreak. However, the agency has classified the risk of Ebola importation into the country as high due to international travel, regional population movement, and cross-border activities.
Travellers under observation are expected to report any symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unexplained bleeding immediately to health authorities. The NCDC has also intensified surveillance at airports, seaports, and border crossings while urging healthcare facilities nationwide to strengthen preparedness and response measures.
The agency reassured Nigerians that preventive measures are in place and encouraged the public to remain calm, stay informed through official channels, and practice good hygiene as the country works to prevent a possible outbreak.
