Oyo protest on children abduction
Oyo protest on children abduction. Residents of Oyo State on Monday staged protests over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, demanding urgent action from security agencies and the government to secure their release.
The demonstrations, which took place in Ibadan and other locations, were led by civil society groups, students, and concerned residents who expressed frustration over the rising insecurity in the state. Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Bring Back Our Children,” “Government Must End Kidnapping,” and “Security for All.”
The protests followed the May 15 abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers in communities within Oriire LGA. The incident has sparked widespread concern across the country, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) directing members to embark on protests and industrial action in solidarity with the victims.
Many public schools across Oyo State were reportedly shut as teachers joined the demonstrations, calling for stronger security measures and the immediate rescue of the abducted children and educators.
President Bola Tinubu has also assured Nigerians that security agencies are working to secure the safe return of the victims, while Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde appealed for calm and urged residents to support ongoing rescue efforts.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of schools and the growing threat of kidnapping in parts of Nigeria.
