Rape Verdict Against Crown Prince’s Stepson Shakes Norway’s Monarchy

Marius Borg Høiby, the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of rape and domestic violence following a seven-week trial in Oslo. The court found him guilty of a rape that took place in the basement of the crown prince’s residence but cleared him of two other rape allegations.
The trial revealed evidence of Høiby’s drug abuse, private recordings, and incriminating messages. He also admitted to lesser offences, including marijuana-related offences, restraining order breaches, and traffic violations. Both prosecutors, who had sought a longer sentence, and his lawyer are considering an appeal.
The case has caused significant damage to the image of the Norwegian royal family, particularly as Høiby has close ties to the monarchy despite having no royal title or official role. It also came amid health challenges facing his mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who is awaiting a lung transplant due to pulmonary fibrosis.

The verdict comes after public support for Norway’s monarchy dropped during the trial, though opinion polls later showed some recovery.
