DSS Arrests Suspect Linked to Attack on Peter Obi, ADC Chieftains in Benin

Operatives of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspect, Udeme Sunday Stephen, in connection with the attack on the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.

The DSS confirmed that the suspect was apprehended following intelligence-led investigations into the incident, which reportedly occurred during a political engagement in the Edo State capital. Security sources disclosed that Udeme Sunday Stephen is believed to have played a role in coordinating or participating in the disruption that targeted supporters and key figures present at the event.

Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the Labour Party, was said to be engaging with party faithful and stakeholders when the disturbance broke out. Several members of the African Democratic Congress were also reportedly present at the gathering.

While details of the attack remain under investigation, eyewitness accounts indicated that tensions escalated suddenly, leading to chaos and security concerns at the venue. No official casualty figures have been released, but authorities assured the public that the situation was swiftly brought under control.

The DSS stated that the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and deter politically motivated violence. The agency emphasized its commitment to safeguarding democratic processes and maintaining peace, particularly as political activities continue across the country.

Security analysts have described the arrest as a significant step toward addressing concerns over election-related violence and intimidation. They urged political actors and their supporters to embrace peaceful engagement and lawful conduct.

As investigations continue, the DSS has indicated that further arrests may follow if additional suspects are identified. Authorities have also called on members of the public with useful information to cooperate with security agencies.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for heightened security measures during political events, especially in key cities such as Benin City, to prevent disruptions and protect lives.
