President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially declared his intention to seek a second term in office, setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive political race ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement, made during a meeting with party leaders and supporters in Abuja, signals Tinubu’s confidence in his administration’s direction and achievements since assuming office in 2023. According to the president, his decision is driven by a desire to consolidate ongoing reforms and ensure long-term stability for the country.

Tinubu highlighted key areas of focus, including economic recovery, infrastructure development, security improvements, and youth empowerment. He emphasized that while challenges remain, his administration has laid a solid foundation for growth, pointing to policy reforms and strategic investments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economy.

“We have started the work, and we must finish it,” Tinubu stated, urging Nigerians to support continuity in leadership to sustain progress. He also reassured citizens that his government remains committed to addressing issues such as inflation, unemployment, and insecurity.

The declaration has already sparked reactions across the political landscape. Members of the ruling All Progressives Congress have largely welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward maintaining policy consistency. Party officials expressed confidence that Tinubu remains a strong candidate capable of securing another mandate.

However, opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party and the Labour Party, have criticized the announcement, arguing that the current administration has not done enough to address pressing national concerns. They have vowed to present formidable candidates to challenge the president in the upcoming election.

Political analysts say Tinubu’s early declaration may give him a strategic advantage, allowing more time to rally support, strengthen alliances, and define the narrative ahead of the election cycle. However, they also note that public perception of economic conditions and governance performance will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

As Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 elections, Tinubu’s declaration marks a significant moment in the country’s political timeline, setting off early campaigns and intensifying debates about the nation’s future direction.

Faleke dismissed opposition efforts to derail the President’s ambition, insisting that Tinubu would emerge victorious in the 2027 polls.

South-west APC Chairman, Dr Isaac Kekemeke, who led other executive members, spoke to newsmen yesterday in Ado Ekiti after the inaugural meeting of the Zonal Working Committee (ZWC).

According to him, Tinubu deserves the South-West’s votes not only because he is from the zone but also because he has performed well.

Alluding to a statement on “Operation Wetie” credited to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, Kekemeke said: “It’s only an enemy of our region that will remind us of that inglorious era. The South-Westerners are wiser than that.

“Governor Makinde’s phony ambition will not drive South-Westerners to do that to themselves again. He is on his own. We urge South-Westerners to treat it as such.”

Speaking on the 10 million votes for Tinubu, he said states in the zones had sets targets for themselves, saying that while Ekiti was targeting between 500,000 to 750,000 votes, Ondo State was targeting over one million votes, just like Oyo, Ogun and others
