Tuberculosis Not a Spiritual Affliction, Osun Tells Residents
The Osun State Government has urged residents to stop viewing Tuberculosis (TB) as a spiritual problem, emphasizing that the disease is a medical condition that can be treated and cured with proper care.
Health officials in the state made this clarification during a public awareness campaign aimed at educating communities on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of TB. According to the government, misconceptions and stigma surrounding the illness have continued to prevent many people from seeking early diagnosis and treatment.
Speaking through the Osun State Ministry of Health, authorities explained that TB is caused by bacteria that primarily affect the lungs and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. They stressed that it is neither caused by witchcraft nor spiritual forces.
The ministry warned that delaying treatment due to such beliefs can lead to severe health complications and even death. Residents were encouraged to visit healthcare centers immediately if they experience persistent cough, chest pain, weight loss, or night sweats common symptoms associated with TB.
Officials also highlighted that treatment for TB is available and often free at designated public health facilities. They reassured residents that early detection significantly increases the chances of full recovery.
The campaign is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate TB in the state and aligns with national and global health goals. Authorities called on community leaders, religious figures, and traditional rulers to help spread accurate information and reduce stigma in their communities.
The Osun State Government reiterated its commitment to improving public health awareness and ensuring access to quality healthcare services, urging residents to rely on medical science rather than misconceptions when dealing with illnesses like tuberculosis.
