Lawyers Demand Open Trial of Delta Officer Over Suspect’s Killing

A coalition of legal practitioners in Delta State has called for a fully transparent and public trial of a security officer accused of killing a suspect while in custody, insisting that justice must not only be done but be seen to be done.

The lawyers, under the umbrella of concerned members of the Nigerian Bar, made the demand amid growing public outrage over the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death. According to them, the incident raises serious questions about accountability, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights within law enforcement operations.

In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the group emphasized that an open trial would help restore public confidence in the justice system. They argued that secrecy or undue delay in prosecuting the case could fuel suspicion of a cover-up and erode trust in state institutions.

“The gravity of this matter requires full transparency,” the statement read. “An open trial will ensure that all facts are laid bare before the public and that justice is neither compromised nor concealed.”

Reports indicate that the suspect died under controversial circumstances after being apprehended by the officer, whose identity has not been officially disclosed. While initial accounts suggested a routine arrest, subsequent revelations have pointed to possible misconduct, prompting calls for an independent investigation.

Human rights advocates have also joined the call, urging authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that the rights of both the victim and the accused officer are respected. They stress that the outcome of the case could set a significant precedent for how similar incidents are handled across the country.

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that the officer involved is currently under investigation, assuring the public that appropriate legal procedures will be followed. However, details of the case remain limited, further intensifying demands for openness.

Legal analysts note that public trials in cases of alleged abuse by security personnel serve as a critical tool in strengthening democratic accountability. They add that such proceedings can deter future violations and reinforce the principle that no one is above the law.

As the case unfolds, many Nigerians are watching closely, with expectations that the judiciary will act decisively and transparently. For now, the call from the legal community remains clear: justice must be pursued in the open, without fear or favor.
