N100,000 Minimum Wage Too Low, Workers Deserve N1 Million — NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has argued that the proposed N100,000 minimum wage is insufficient to meet the current economic realities facing Nigerian workers, insisting that employees deserve a monthly salary of at least N1 million.

Speaking on the state of workers’ welfare amid rising inflation, increasing food prices, transportation costs, and the growing cost of living, labour leaders maintained that many Nigerian workers are struggling to meet basic needs despite being employed.

According to the NLC, wages should reflect the country’s economic conditions and provide workers with a decent standard of living. The union stressed that the purchasing power of salaries has been severely eroded, leaving many households under financial pressure.

The labour body called on the federal and state governments to prioritize workers’ welfare and implement policies that improve living conditions, arguing that fair remuneration is essential for productivity, economic growth, and social stability.

The demand comes as debates over wage adjustments continue across the country, with labour unions pushing for improved compensation to cushion the effects of economic hardship on millions of Nigerians.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described the proposed N100,000 minimum wage as inadequate, insisting that Nigerian workers deserve a monthly salary of at least N1 million to cope with the rising cost of living.

The labour union argued that soaring food prices, transportation costs, rent, and inflation have significantly reduced the value of workers’ earnings, making it difficult for many families to meet their basic needs.

According to the NLC, improving workers’ wages is necessary to ensure a decent standard of living and boost productivity across the country.

The call comes amid ongoing discussions on workers’ welfare and efforts to address the economic challenges affecting millions of Nigerians.
