The Nigerian media landscape is mourning the loss of Mrs. Rafat Idris Salami (Onyecher), a respected journalist and Assistant Director of Digital Media at Voice of Nigeria (VON), who passed away on December 19, 2024, at approximately 11 p.m.
A Distinguished Career
Rafat Salami’s career in journalism was marked by professionalism, passion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. She joined Voice of Nigeria (VON) in 2001 as a news correspondent and producer, where she rapidly gained recognition for her incisive reporting and production skills. Notable programs she worked on included VONSCOPE, Sixty Minutes, and Africa Hour.
Her multilingual proficiency in English, Hausa, Yoruba, and Ebira distinguished her in the field, and her sharp editorial acumen earned her respect among peers and audiences alike. Salami’s dedication to health and human-interest reporting made her one of VON’s standout journalists.
A Unionist and Advocate for Press Freedom
Salami was deeply involved in the fight for press freedom and journalists’ welfare. She served as Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abuja Council and played a key role in hosting the International Press Institute (IPI) Congress in 2018. She was also re-elected as Treasurer of IPI Nigeria Leadership, where she continued advocating for ethical journalism and media integrity. Her contributions were recognized by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As an active member of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Salami championed gender equity and supported the mentorship of young female journalists. Her legacy includes empowering the next generation of media professionals and advocating for equal representation in the industry.

A devout Muslim, she was involved in various humanitarian initiatives, including the VON Anti-Corruption Group and the Al-Habiyya Muslim Organization. She also founded the Okenite Foundation for Special Needs Children, reflecting her dedication to societal well-being. The Okenite was ignited by the passion she had on her Optistic son who marked his 20th birthday last year.

Hailing from Ihima in the Okenne Local Government Area of Kogi State, Salami leaves behind a lasting impact on Nigerian journalism. Her professionalism, advocacy for press freedom, and humanitarian efforts have left an indelible mark on the industry and society at large. She is survived by her three children.
