Tension has gripped parts of Benue State following the abduction of several passengers, including candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), in a fresh attack by suspected gunmen along the Makurdi–Otukpo highway.
The incident reportedly occurred late Wednesday when a commercial bus conveying passengers from Makurdi to Otukpo was ambushed by armed attackers. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the gunmen intercepted the vehicle, forced it to a halt, and ordered all occupants out before leading them into a nearby forest.
Among those abducted were young students traveling to sit for the ongoing UTME organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The development has sparked widespread concern, as many of the victims were said to be on a crucial academic journey that could shape their future.
While the exact number of abducted persons remains unclear, local sources suggest that between 14 and 18 passengers were taken by the attackers. One individual reportedly managed to escape during the chaos and later alerted authorities, prompting a swift response from security agencies.
Officials in the area have confirmed the attack and assured the public that efforts are underway to secure the release of the victims. Security operatives, including local vigilante groups, have been deployed to comb surrounding forests in search of the abductors and those held captive.
The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area condemned the incident, describing it as unfortunate and deeply troubling, especially given that it involved students. He emphasized the need for intensified security measures along the highway, which has become increasingly notorious for criminal activities in recent months.
Residents and commuters have continued to express fear over the growing insecurity along the Makurdi–Otukpo road, calling on both state and federal authorities to take decisive action. Many have also raised concerns about the safety of students who must travel long distances to participate in national examinations.
This latest abduction highlights the persistent security challenges facing parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions where highways have become hotspots for kidnappings. As search and rescue operations continue, families of the victims remain anxious, hoping for their safe return.
