The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq, wanted over an alleged $1.3 million fraud and diversion of public funds.

According to the anti-graft agency, Farouq is being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy, abuse of office, and mismanagement of funds linked to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs during her time in office between 2019 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The EFCC said the former minister allegedly diverted funds meant to be refunded to the ministry under the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office programme. The commission also accused her and former Permanent Secretary Bashir Nura Alkali of converting about $1.3 million and ₦746.6 million for personal use.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja had earlier issued a warrant for her arrest after she and other defendants failed to appear for arraignment on a 21-count charge filed by the EFCC.

In a wanted notice published on Saturday, the EFCC urged anyone with useful information about Farouq’s whereabouts to contact the commission or the nearest security agency. The commission listed her last known address as EN 008, Okpo River, off Agulu Street, Maitama, Abuja.
