Federal High Court Bars VIO from Stopping Vehicles, Imposing Fines in Abuja

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dealt a significant blow to the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) in the capital city. In a landmark ruling, the court has prohibited the VIO from stopping vehicles, confiscating them, and imposing fines on motorists.
Justice Evelyn Maha issued the order, effectively halting these practices that many motorists have deemed oppressive and unjustified. The decision came in response to a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by human rights attorney Abubakar Marshal.
The court’s ruling found that the VIO lacks the legal authority to engage in these actions, declaring them unlawful. The decision has far-reaching implications for motorists in Abuja, providing them with greater protection against arbitrary enforcement of traffic laws.
