Soludo Names Kukah as Chancellor of Anambra Varsity
The Governor of Charles Soludo has appointed Matthew Hassan Kukah as the Chancellor of Anambra State University, in a move aimed at strengthening the institution’s leadership and moral direction.
The announcement, made through an official statement from the Anambra State Government, described Bishop Kukah as a respected national figure whose wealth of experience in leadership, governance, and advocacy would bring credibility and renewed vision to the university system.
Governor Soludo noted that Kukah’s track record in promoting dialogue, education, and national unity makes him well-suited for the largely ceremonial but highly influential role of Chancellor. He added that the appointment aligns with his administration’s broader agenda to reposition education in the state as a driver of development and innovation.
Bishop Kukah, who currently serves as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, is widely known for his outspoken views on national issues, interfaith engagement, and democratic governance. His appointment is expected to boost the university’s profile both locally and internationally.
Reactions to the announcement have begun to emerge, with many stakeholders in the education sector welcoming the decision, citing Kukah’s integrity and intellectual depth as key assets. However, some observers have also called for sustained investment in infrastructure and academic resources to complement leadership changes.
The role of Chancellor in Nigerian universities is largely ceremonial, involving presiding over convocations and serving as a symbolic head, while the day-to-day administration remains under the Vice-Chancellor.
This development marks another step in Soludo’s ongoing efforts to reform the education sector in Anambra State, as his administration continues to emphasize quality, accountability, and global competitiveness in its institutions.
