FG Won’t Reinstate Subsidies or Introduce Price Controls — Taiwo Oyedele

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its stance on economic reforms, stating that it will not reintroduce fuel subsidies or impose price controls on goods and services. This position was made clear by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee.

Speaking during a policy engagement session, Oyedele emphasized that the era of subsidies, particularly on petroleum products, had created significant fiscal strain on the nation’s economy. According to him, continuing such a system would undermine long-term economic stability and limit the government’s ability to invest in critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

He explained that price controls, often used to regulate the cost of essential goods, could distort market dynamics and discourage investment. Instead, the government is focused on creating a more transparent and competitive market environment that allows prices to be determined by supply and demand.

Oyedele acknowledged that the removal of subsidies has contributed to rising living costs, a concern shared by many Nigerians. However, he noted that targeted interventions, including social support programs and tax reforms, are being designed to cushion the impact on vulnerable citizens.

The government’s position aligns with broader economic reforms initiated under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which aim to reduce fiscal deficits, attract foreign investment, and promote sustainable growth.

Economic analysts remain divided on the policy direction. While some experts support the move as necessary for long-term recovery, others argue that immediate relief measures are needed to address the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians.

As the reforms continue, the government has called for patience and cooperation, assuring citizens that the policies are designed to build a more resilient and self-sustaining economy in the years ahead.
